The Brave Writer Gazette is a Brave Writer student publication showcasing the work of the journalism students from The Scoop: The Art of Journalism. In this class, students learned and practiced elements of journalism, including:

  • Exercising the power of observation
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Choosing supporting quotes
  • Attributing sources
  • Using color
  • Writing a lead sentence
  • Crafting a nut graph
  • The inverted pyramid
  • Headline writing
  • Choosing accompanying art/photographs

They also explored and discussed:

  • The definition of news
  • News values
  • Pitching a story
  • Asking the right questions
  • Accuracy and fact checking
  • Fairness and balance in reporting
  • Framing a story
  • Publication

  1. Wow! I only had time to skim right now, but reading the first lines of each article, I am drawn right in and want to keep reading. These are all very impressive articles! I can’t wait until my daughter’s old enough to enroll in this class!
